Seoul Gangnam Comprehensive Social Welfare Center has reported remarkable improvements in the physical functions of elderly participants after operating an artificial intelligence (AI)-based personalized exercise program through Seoul’s specialized pilot project for care services. Ahead of the Integrated Care Support Act scheduled to be implemented in March next year, the welfare center is developing a care linkage model centered on community welfare institutions.
Led by Director Jo Jun-bae, the Gangnam Comprehensive Social Welfare Center operates an “AI Personalized Exercise” program under the SMART Senior Comprehensive Support Center, combining welfare technology with exercise guidance. The program utilizes iPIXEL’s “EXERCITE Care” equipment to recommend exercises tailored to each participant’s physical characteristics. It recognizes movements in real time, analyzes accuracy and repetition, and provides posture correction and feedback.
Based on these insights, exercise instructors adjust the exercise intensity individually and continuously monitor participants’ progress. One participant shared, “Due to my disability, I had long been unable to walk backward, but through this program, I managed to do it for the first time. My body feels lighter, and I’ve gained confidence.”
According to the welfare center, “By combining AI feedback with professional exercise guidance, the elderly participants’ movement patterns have become more stable, and their muscle strength has improved. This has gone beyond mere physical fitness to helping them regain independence in daily life.”
The SMART Personalized Exercise program is based on a comprehensive aging diagnosis that evaluates five key areas — physical health, cognitive and mental health, social health, living environment, and self-determination ability. Exercises are then tailored to each individual’s physical condition.
A welfare center official stated, “AI personalized exercise not only helps restore the physical abilities of the elderly but also alleviates caregiving burdens and reduces medical costs.” The official further emphasized, “Continuous budget support and institutional foundations are essential to ensure such innovative efforts are sustainable rather than one-time projects.”
In addition to the personalized exercise program, the institution also operates AIP (Aging In Place), a home-visit exercise program for seniors with mobility difficulties.
